Article Details

The information in this article applies to UltiMaker S series printers, including the UltiMaker S3, S5, S6, S7, and S8.

Note: Some steps of the welcome setup may be different, depending on the printer model or configuration. Any model-specific information or differences are highlighted in the steps below.

Use the switch at the back to power on the printer. When you turn on the UltiMaker S series printer for the first time, the printer will guide you through the welcome setup. This setup contains several steps that are crucial before you can start printing.

The steps of the welcome setup are presented in the recommended order, but you can select the steps in any order you prefer. All the actions in the welcome setup can also be performed individually via the menu after completing or skipping the welcome setup.

Tip: The welcome setup will also appear after performing a factory reset.

Language

First, select your preferred language from the list. The UltiMaker S series firmware is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Korean, and Russian.

Tip: After the welcome setup, you can always change the language via the Options menu (gear icon).

Data sharing

After the language selection, you will see a notification for data sharing on your UltiMaker printer. When enabled, UltiMaker collects anonymous diagnostic data from the printer. This helps us identify issues, monitor performance, and improve product reliability.

You do not need to do anything to enable data sharing. Simply press OK to continue.

Note: If you do not wish to share any data, you can disable this option in the Settings menu. If you have concerns, please visit this page for more information.

Print core

Note: This step is only for the UltiMaker S3, S5, and S7. The UltiMaker S6 and S8 include two AA+ 0.4 print cores, which are already installed in the print head.

The UltiMaker S3, S5, and S7 include three print cores. One print core (AA 0.4) is already installed in slot 1 of the print head; the others (AA 0.4 and BB 0.4) are in the accessory box. During the welcome setup, the second print core must be installed. To do this, follow the steps on the display. Learn more here:

Tip: After the welcome setup, you can change print cores via the Configuration menu.

Materials

Before you can start printing on your new S series printer, you need to load materials. For the first use, it is recommended to use the materials that came with the printer; the welcome setup will request these materials to be loaded.

The instructions for loading material spools depend on your printer configuration: with or without Material Station.

Using the spool holder

When using the spool holder (no Material Station), first load material 2. This will be placed on the spool holder, with the material in clockwise direction. Material 1 will be placed on the filament guide, which goes on the back of the spool holder.

Follow the steps on the display or learn more here:

With Material Station

Loading spools in the Material Station is quick and simple. Place the first spool in any of the six bays and insert the filament tip into filament entry port 1 to load it for extruder 1 (left). The second spool can also be placed in any bay; insert the filament into entry port 2.

Follow the steps on the display or learn more here:

Tip: After the welcome setup, you can change materials via the Configuration menu.

Network

UltiMaker S series printers can connect to the network to enable remote printing. You can use the supplied Ethernet cable, or set up Wi-Fi. To connect your S series printer to a wireless network, you will need a computer or smartphone. Learn more here:

Tip: After the welcome setup, you can set up a network connection via the Network menu in the Options overview (gear icon).

Firmware

If the printer is connected to a network, it will automatically check if a newer firmware version is available. If so, confirm to download and install it. This will take several minutes.

If the printer is not connected to the internet, you can check and install the latest firmware version manually via USB.
