Periodically, a new version of the UltiMaker S6 and S8 firmware is released. To ensure that your printer has the latest features, we recommend keeping the firmware updated. You can update the firmware on the S6 or S8 via the network (if connected) or using a USB stick.
Tip: For the latest release notes, please check this page: UltiMaker S6 and S8 - Firmware release notes
The most recent firmware versions for the UltiMaker S6 and S8 are 11.2.4 (Latest) and 11.1.0 (Stable):
Note: The same firmware can be used on the UltiMaker S6 and S8, but this is not compatible with UltiMaker S3, S5, or S7. Do not attempt to install this firmware on printers other than the S6 or S8.
Update your UltiMaker S6 or S8 via USB
If the UltiMaker S6 or S8 is not connected to a network, you can update the firmware via USB. Take the following steps:
- Download the firmware file via the link above.
- Place the firmware file (.swu) in the root directory of a USB stick.
- Insert the USB stick into the USB port of your printer.
- In the Options menu (gear icon), go to Maintenance → Update firmware, and select the new firmware in the update menu.
Wait for the UltiMaker S6 or S8 to finish updating the firmware. The printer will restart.
Note: Never remove the USB stick and never power off the printer during the installation.
Update your UltiMaker S6 or S8 via the network
Connect the printer to the network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet in the Network menu. If the printer is already connected to the network, it will show a prompt whenever a new firmware version becomes available. If you choose to postpone the update, take the following steps when you are ready to install the new firmware:
- Go to the Printer tasks, or open the Options menu (gear icon) and navigate to Maintenance → Update firmware.
- Select the Stable or Latest version, depending on your preferred firmware channel.
- Press Install to start updating the firmware.
Wait for the UltiMaker S6 or S8 to finish updating the firmware. The printer will restart.
Note: Never power off the printer or interrupt the network connection while the firmware update is in progress.
Blocking firmware
The first units of the UltiMaker S6 and S8 were shipped from the factory with a blocking firmware. When the printer is powered on for the first time, an update screen will appear instead of the welcome setup. The printer must first be updated via USB.
To update via USB from blocking firmware, follow steps 1 - 3 above (under Update via USB), press Update on the display, and select the firmware file.
Note: Ensure to check that the firmware version shown on the display is correct (matching the version number listed above). If the display shows 'DAY0' firmware (this is the blocking version currently installed on the printer), the new firmware file may not be stored to the USB drive correctly, it is nested in a folder, or the drive is not recognized. Try downloading and saving the firmware again, use a different USB stick, or contact support if this does not resolve the problem.
