Periodically, a new version of the UltiMaker S5 firmware is released. To ensure that your UltiMaker S5 has the latest features, we recommend keeping the firmware updated. This can be performed on the UltiMaker S5 when connected to a network or via USB.

Tip: For the latest release notes, please check this page: UltiMaker S series firmware release notes

The most recent firmware versions for the UltiMaker S5 R1 are 9.0.3 (Latest) and 9.0.2 (Stable), and for the S5 R2 are 9.0.5 (Latest) and 9.0.3 (Stable).

Note: Because the UltiMaker S5 R1 has reached the End of Life stage and is no longer supported, this model will not receive any future firmware updates.

Update your UltiMaker S5 via USB

The UltiMaker S5 was first released in 2018. In March 2020, UltiMaker introduced a new version of the UltiMaker S5. Read about the differences between the two versions on this page. The different versions of the UltiMaker S5 have different electronics boards and require different firmware files.

You can easily distinguish the R1 from the R2 versions by the branded side panels. The image on the left shows the UltiMaker S5 R1 (2018 - early 2020) with the Ultibot on the side panels. The image on the right shows the newer version of the UltiMaker S5 (R2) with the 'U' icon on the side panels.

Steps to update:

  1. Download the firmware file for the correct S5 version via the link above.
  2. Place the firmware file (.swu) in the root directory of a USB stick.
  3. Insert the USB stick into the USB port of your printer.
  4. Open the Options menu (gear icon), navigate to Maintenance → Update firmware, and select the new firmware in the update menu.

Wait for the UltiMaker S5 to finish updating the firmware. The printer will restart.

Note: Never remove the USB stick and never power off the printer while the firmware update is in progress.

Update your UltiMaker S5 via the network

Connect the printer to the network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet in the Options menu (gear icon) and select Network. If the printer is already connected to the network, it will show a prompt whenever a new firmware version becomes available. If you choose to postpone the update until later, take the following steps when you are ready to install the new firmware.

Tip: When updating the firmware via the network, the printer will automatically download the correct version.

  1. Go to the Printer tasks, or open the Options menu (gear icon) and navigate to Maintenance → Update firmware.
  2. Select the Stable or Latest version, depending on your preferred firmware channel.
  3. Press Install to start updating the firmware.

Wait for the UltiMaker S5 to finish updating the firmware. The printer will restart.

Note: Never power off the printer or interrupt the network connection while the firmware update is in progress.

Updating from older firmware (v 5.1.x and older)

When updating from very old firmware (versions 5.1.x and older), a stepping stone firmware version (5.1.94) must be installed first. Download both files below (.tar and .tar.sig) and save them in the root folder of your USB stick.

After installing 5.1.94, download the correct version of the latest or stable UltiMaker S5 firmware as described above, and update the firmware again.
