This major version release for S series offers many firmware reliability improvements from Factor 4.

Note: As this is a major version increase, it is not possible to downgrade to version 8 or earlier after installing firmware 9.0.0. This includes switching between the Latest and Stable channels.

New features and bug fixes:

• Any color support. Combined with UltiMaker Cura 5.9, this firmware enables you to print with any UltiMaker color loaded in the Material Station that is compatible with the print job. Instead of slicing for a particular color, select the "Any color" option from the material list in Cura. This feature is only available for printers compatible with the Material Station.
• Printer API. Added "created_at", "owner", and "material_used" to the printer API.
• Developer mode. Enabling developer mode will generate a new random password for SSH.
• Network reset. All network settings can be reset to help resolve Wi-Fi hotspot issues.
• Date and time. The printer will display the current date and time in the top right corner of the screen. It is also possible to manually set the date and time via the UI, which could help resolve Digital Factory setup issues.
• Fixes. This version off many bug fixes, including all the bug fixes as part of the Factor 4 releases.

Note: In combination with UltiMaker Cura 5.9, the maximum build plate temperature for S series printers has been limited to 120 °C. Higher temperatures can often not be reliably achieved, which may cause errors, and prolonged exposure to temperatures > 120 °C may cause damage to the print table back cover.

Firmware 8.3.1

Firmware 8.3.1 is a hotfix release for the UltiMaker S5 and S7 Pro Bundle.

Note: This firmware version is also compatible with the UltiMaker S3 and the S5 or S7 without Material Station. However, there is only one implementation compared to 8.3.0 which only affects the Material Station.

Bug fixes

• End-of-filament fix. Firmware 8.3.0 introduced a problem with the automatic spool switching on the UltiMaker S5 and S7 Pro Bundle. When an end-of-filament situation occurred during a dual-extrusion print, the printer could freeze. This is now fixed.

Firmware version 8.3.0 for S series includes several workflow improvements, new functionalities, and bug fixes.

New features

• Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time.
• Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state.
• Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer's display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.

Improvements

• Boot-up time. Made improvements to the boot-up sequence for S series printers that reduce the time to boot up by over 10 seconds.
• Reduced deprime time. Turning on the cooling fans during depriming reduces the time to reach the break temperature and speeds up the depriming process. This change affects the Pro Bundle (UltiMaker S5 or S7 with Material Station).
• Developer mode. Enabling or disabling Developer Mode is now done instantaneously and no longer requires rebooting the machine. Please note that enabling Developer Mode is always done at the user's own risk.
• Reduced log chatter. Reduced the chatter of the mjpg-streamer service in the log files. This is mainly useful for support engineers, as these lines could overwrite useful information required for troubleshooting.

Bug fixes

• Change print core procedure. If there was still material in the print core on a Pro Bundle, changing the print core was not possible due to the positioning of the print head and build plate after the deprime procedure. This has now been fixed. This change does not affect printers without a Material Station.
• Display service crashes. The display service (Okuda) could crash if no print core was installed and that slot was selected in the Configuration overview. This has now been fixed.

Note: An issue was detected with this firmware version. When experiencing an end-of-filament situation during dual-extrusion prints on the UltiMaker S5 or S7 Pro Bundle, the printer will get stuck in the deprime process.
Update: A fix is now available with firmware version 8.3.1.

Firmware 8.2.1

Firmware 8.2.1 offers a few significant reliability updates for the Air Manager and the UltiMaker S7.

New functionality and improvements

• ER80 Air Manager. In case of a communication problem with the Air Manager on the UltiMaker S5 and S7, the printer will now allow the print job to finish. A warning will be shown on the display instead.
• UltiMaker S7 leveling. Improved the reliability of active leveling on the UltiMaker S7, using an auto-calibration feature of the leveling sensor.

Additionally, a small change was implemented for the home screen (status overview): USB is now capitalized.

Firmware 8.2.0

Firmware 8.2 is released on the Latest and Stable channels for S series printers. This version contains an important compatibility update, improved logging, and several bug fixes.

New functionality and improvements

• Improved logging. The printer's log files that can be saved to a USB drive now include network connectivity issue logging to improve diagnostics.
• Unified firmware build. The firmware builds for all S series printers (except the UltiMaker S5R1) are now unified into one version. Previously, when updating the firmware via USB, a different file had to be installed based on the electronics version and BOM number of the printer. This is now simplified and includes compatibility for future versions.

Note: The UltiMaker S5R1 still has a separate firmware build as the electronics of this printer model are completely different. Learn more here.

Bug fixes

• Print core LEDs. Fixed a bug that caused the print core LEDs to behave incorrectly. The print cores would glow the wrong color during heating (slot 1) or the LEDs would not turn on at all (slot 2). This is now fixed and the cores show the expected behavior again.
• Missing switch bay calibration causes ER999. If the printer was missing switch bay calibration information when a print was started (for example after a recovery install or electronics replacement), this could lead to an ER999 error message. This is now fixed; the printer will correctly show a calibration prompt instead of an error.
• REST API pause. Fixed a bug in the REST API with PUT /print_job/state causing an ER999.

Firmware 8.1.3

• Fixed a bug in the country selection during the Wi-Fi setup.

Firmware 8.1.1 is a patch release for S-line printers that addresses some known issues found in the 8.1.0 version. Please see the release notes for 8.1.0 below for the main updates included in the firmware 8 branch.

Bug fixes and improvements

• UltiMaker S7 leveling. The measurement window for allowed probe distances was increased for the UltiMaker S7 active leveling process for increased leveling reliability.
• USB print caused crash. Firmware 8.1.0 contained a bug that would cause the printer to freeze if a print job was started via USB immediately after the printer boots up. This is now fixed.
• API and pause at height. Fixed a regression that broke the API authentication and pause-at-layer-height message window.

Firmware 8.1.0

Firmware 8.1 is released on both the Latest and Stable channels for the UltiMaker S3, UltiMaker S5, and UltiMaker S7. This version contains new functionalities, general improvements, and bug fixes.

Note: The Local Management Console was downscoped in this version, see the section Removed functionalities below. Grouping functionality has been removed from version 8.1. It is highly recommended to ungroup all printers before updating.

Note: After updating to firmware 8.1, it is not supported to downgrade to a 7.x or earlier version.

Caution: An issue was detected with firmware 8.1.0. If a print job is started via USB immediately after the printer boots up, this can cause the printer to crash. Please always wait at least 10 seconds after the printer has finished booting up before starting a new print job via USB. UltiMaker is investigating this problem.
Update: This issue is fixed in firmware 8.1.1.

New functionality and improvements

• Improved queue behavior. It is now possible to pause the print job queue directly via the user interface on the printer and restart it when desired. This can be used if you want to perform maintenance tasks before starting the next print job.
• Screen improvements. The default idle screen is improved; it now contains clearer information about how to start a print job and is dependent on whether or not a USB drive is inserted. The appearance of errors and popups (dialogs) is also improved.
• 24V monitoring. A new feature that monitors the 24V supply. This protects the stepper drivers from failing, which happened in rare cases. If there is an issue with the 24V supply, a new error will appear (ER48).
• Optimized Air Manager speed. In situations where a new print job is started immediately after the previous job has finished, the Air Manager fan speed is optimized.
• Digital Factory connection. Connecting the printer to the UltiMaker Digital Factory is made easier.
• Booting up. The start-up time has been reduced by 15 seconds.
• Logging. We now use the ISO time in the log files, which includes the year and time zone.

Bug fixes

• Print head crash. Fixed a rare case in which the print head would crash into the part after the print has been completed.
• Dehumidifier warnings. Warnings from the Material Station dehumidifier are no longer promoted to errors. This should reduce occurrences of ER67, especially related to humidity.
• Flow sensor. Fixed a bug preventing the flow sensor from detecting an extrusion problem in raft layers. This mainly affected printing with the Metal Expansion Kit.
• Fan noise. Fixed the situation whereby the print head fans were turned off but still kept making electronic noise.
• Footprint probing. For the UltiMaker S7, footprint probing during the active leveling process is reenabled. Additionally, fixed a bug in the gcode parser causing footprint probing to sometimes break, and the printer reverted back to full grid probe instead.
• XY offset. Fixed bug whereby an extreme nozzle XY offset makes the print head miss the switching bay.
• Active leveling. If the detected height of both print cores during the first two probes in the active leveling process is equal, it is likely that the print core switching is not functioning well. A new dialog will inform the user to check the lift switch calibration.

Removed functionalities

In firmware version 8.1, the Local Management Console (accessible via the printer's local IP address) was downscoped and the following functionalities were removed:

• Print history
• Reprint from history
• Maintenance information
• Notifications

Most of the functionalities listed above are available in the UltiMaker Digital Factory.

Known issue

Note: The LED behavior of the print cores is affected by this firmware version. The print core in slot 1 may turn green instead of orange while heating, and the LED for the print core in slot 2 does not turn on at all. This was fixed in version 8.2.0.

Bed leveling reliability

Ultimaker S-line firmware versions 7.0.4 and 7.1.0 contained an error in the bed leveling code. This caused an increase in failed bed leveling attempts when starting a print, while the hardware was working perfectly fine. This 7.1.3 release fixes the issue and significantly improves bed leveling performance.

Firmware 7.1.0

Improvements

• Skip cooldown. At the end of a print (when finished or aborted), the Confirm removal option will be available immediately, without waiting for the build plate to cool down. This improves the end-of-print workflow and allows the next print job to be started faster.

Caution: The status bar on the display will still indicate when the glass build plate is safe to touch (< 60 °C). Never remove the glass build plate when it is still too hot, or wear PPE such as thermal gloves.

• XY calibration. User interface and usability improvements were implemented for the XY calibration process on the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle.

Bug fixes

• XY calibration. Previously unhandled scenarios at the start of the XY calibration process have been corrected. This only affected the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle.
• Z offset compensation. Firmware 7.0.3 included print quality improvements on the first layer, due to Z offset compensation. A regression occurred in 7.0.4; this has now been fixed again.
• Print core data. Improved the reliability of the print core detection. The printer now checks for more data on the EEPROM.

Note: The following is a known issue: The material flow sensor does not accurately detect end-of-filament during Metal printing with the Metal Expansion Kit. The material flow sensor will pause the print too late and the print will not be recoverable.

Firmware 7.0

Firmware 7.0 brings improvements to both the performance and interactivity of the printers via an updated user interface. The touchscreen menu is refreshed with improved icons and notifications. Furthermore, a number of bugs have been fixed.

Features

• New improved user interface. The touchscreen interface has been updated. A notification bar at the top of the touchscreen now provides details about the state of the printer, such as whether it's connected to the internet, Ultimaker Digital Factory, or whether the firewall is enabled. An orange bar will be displayed on the menu if the printer has a heated bed. Furthermore, the overview menu is now dynamic, alerting at a quick glance of the state of a print job. The print job actions, such as “pause/resume”, are now highlighted and brought to the main menu, where they are now easily displayed and accessible via the touchscreen.
• Connectivity improvements. A number of cases were detected which could interfere with the printer connection with the Ultimaker Digital Factory, or even cause a network dropout. We have fixed some of the known cases. If you are still encountering connectivity issues after updating to 7.0, please get in contact via a support ticket
• Load fail wizard when an error occurs during pre-print. In an earlier firmware, we introduced a load fail wizard which was triggered when filament loading failed during a print. The wizard has now been enabled when loading fails pre-print.

Bug fixes

• Print head communication errors. A change was implemented to reduce the occurrences of these errors, notably ER34
• Improved readability of end of filament text for the Standalone printers. The filament flow sensor triggering on a standalone would often incorrectly report that an end of the spool has been reached. This is now changed to reflect that the flow sensor can be triggered for other reasons.
• Break fail wizard displayed wrong image. A user pointed out that the image that was used in the break fail wizard was not reflective of the action that needed to be done. This is now fixed and the correct image will be displayed.
• Print job info missing on a retried print job. When retrying a print job, some information would get lost between the print jobs. Improvements have been done and it is now possible to interact with the re-tried print job via the Digital Factory, allowing you to pause, resume or abort the retried print job. Print jobs with foreign characters.
• File names without any ASCII characters could not be sent to S-line printers. Print files containing only foreign characters, such as Chinese, Hebrew, or Cyrillic, did not reach the printer. This is now fixed, so there are no more character restrictions.

Firmware 6.5.1

Firmware 6.5.1 is a performance and stability update to the S-line printers and products. This release includes several bug fixes for a more reliable and consistent workflow. Firmware version 6.5.1 is available on the Latest channel.

• One-at-a-time mode. When encountering an End of Filament while using the one-at-a-time mode, the print head could potentially collide with a printed object. This is now fixed.
• Pause-at-height plugin. When resuming a print that was paused automatically by the pause-at-height plugin in Ultimaker Cura, the extrusion was delayed. This could lead to a failed print. This is now fixed.
• Display print result after reboot. After rebooting the printer following a failed print, usually because of an error message, the display would sometimes show the incorrect print result. Several changes were implemented to ensure that after a reboot, the screen will always correctly display the print result as ‘Finished’, ‘Aborted’, or ‘Failed’.
• ER65 false positives. A change was implemented to reduce the number of ER65 false positives. ER65 is a flow sensor error on the Pro Bundle, which was sometimes incorrectly triggered due to a certain command in the code.
• Stuck in preparing. In some cases, the printer would get stuck in the 'Preparing to print' state. This is now fixed.
• Digital Factory connection. Continued work to improve the connection stability between the printer and the Digital Factory.

Firmware 6.5.0

Firmware 6.5.0 is a performance update to the S-line printers. The firmware brings process improvements, compatibility with the CC 0.4 print core, and the ability to import material profiles via USB. The printer networking packages are also updated, providing improved functionality in the Digital Factory. This firmware is released to the latest channel.

• Updated deprime parameters for generic material profiles. The deprime changes that were introduced for Ultimaker materials in firmware 6.4 have now been extended to generic material profiles.
• Refresh screen on ER998. The ER998 errors show up when an unknown exception is raised. The error only affects the printer screen. The printer remains operational and can still print and be operated remotely. The ER998 screen now offers a refresh screen option that can be used safely when the error is raised, even during printing.
• Flow sensor based material loading. In the Pro Bundle, the flow sensor is now utilized better during the loading of materials. Loading materials should happen more accurately now, with less chance of material grinding. This will reduce occurrences of loading errors.
• Scan USB drive for material profiles. It will now be possible to add a material profile to the S-line printer from a USB drive. The printer can update its material list with any missing material profiles found in the print job files (UFP files) of an inserted USB stick. Import the profile by navigating to Maintenance → Import material profiles. This allows for offline synchronizing of material profiles.
• Set update channel via Digital Factory. Admins and owners of printers can now change the firmware channel on a printer. Either Latest or Stable channels are available.
• Printer compatibility with the new CC 0.4 core. This firmware ensures compatibility of the printer with the new Ultimaker print core CC 0.4.
• Digital Factory can only accept single printers. It is no longer possible to add a clustered printer to the Digital Factory.

Firmware 6.4.1

Firmware 6.4.1 is a hotfix update to S-line printers. It contains small feature upgrades to the 6.4 firmware released a few weeks earlier.

• Fixed a backward compatibility issue with material profiles. The flush purge length for Ultimaker materials has been reintroduced, fixing compatibility issues between firmware versions.
• Fixed a typo in German translation. There was a typo in the German translation of a screen. ‘vn’ is now correctly displayed as ‘von’. Thanks to user Jonas98 from the community for reporting this.
• Misleading print aborted message. Fixed a bug that caused a print abort message to appear after a successful print job.
• Print failure state error. Fixed a bug where a print failure during active leveling reported the wrong state. The active leveling procedure will now correctly report the state when it fails during a print job.

Firmware 6.4.0

Firmware 6.4 is a reliability update for the S-line and the Pro Bundle and adds PETG compatibility. An improved deprime procedure and improved error handling reduce loading errors and break fail errors for the S-line Pro Bundle, affecting ER34, ER35, and ER80.

Features

• Ultimaker PETG profile. This firmware allows the printing of Ultimaker PETG.
• Reboot button on fatal errors. It is now possible to reboot a printer using the touchscreen interface when a fatal error is encountered.
• New deprime procedure. After many months of experimenting, new parameters have been incorporated into the deprime procedure. This will further improve filament break and filament tip stability, reducing the chance of errors occurring due to material movement.
• Digital Factory connection prevented if host of a printer group. Grouping printers is no longer supported in the Digital Factory and functionality will be retired in the nearby future.

Bug fixes

• Added delay between ER34 occurrence. This should lead to more success in recovery from the error code, leading to a decrease in fatal error occurrence.
• Added delay between ER80 occurrence. This should lead to more success in recovery from the error code, leading to a decrease in fatal error occurrence.
• Fixed a bug for Digital Factory leading to repeated error messages. Error messages were wrongly displayed multiple times in the Digital Factory. This is now fixed.

Firmware 6.3.0

Firmware 6.3 is a process release that brings no changes to the S-line functionality. New cloud packages are incorporated to fix cloud API integration, and some bugs are fixed. The firmware was released on the Latest channel.

Features

• Add a unique ID to a cloud print job instance. Print job ID was previously handed out by Ultimaker Connect after a print job reached the printer. This allows for proper cloud API integration.
• FDM materials package update. The FDM materials package has been updated. The heated bed temperatures for Ultimaker TPU and Ultimaker CPE have changed to 0 ºC and 85 ºC respectively.

Bug fixes

• ER999 when using pause at layer height. Fixed issues that would lead to an ER999 when using the pause at layer height plugin.
• Remove log pollution of NFC writing. The bootlogs have been cleaned up by removing log lines relating to NFC data writing.
• Load extruder 2 in welcome step shows correct photo. Previously, the same photo was shown for loading material to extruder 1 or to extruder 2.
• Firmware update over https. Firmware channel security improved by using https instead of http.

The firmware enables the user to select a firmware channel, either Stable or Latest. Some smaller performance improvements have been done. Furthermore, this firmware sets the foundation for a cloud-enabled pin code to be implemented within the machine.

Features

• Use of stable and latest channel. The user can now select whether they would like to receive firmware prompts from the stable or the latest channel. If using the latest channel, the user will be prompted to update every time there is a new firmware update, giving them access to the latest features as and when they are available. By using the stable channel, the user will be prompted to update roughly 3 times a year. All features will have been thoroughly tested not only by Ultimaker, but will also be field-tested for at least 3 months before making their way to the stable channel.
• Set network country code and printer name in config file. It is now possible to set up the country code with the config file used to provision the network settings on your printer.
• Securing settings using PIN code via Digital Factory. It is now possible to set a security pin for your printer. The security PIN can be set up by a Digital Factory admin, and will secure the settings screen of the printer. This way no unauthorized changes can be made. Find more information about the PIN code here.

Bug fixes

• Parked material filament handling improved. If the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle is rebooted with material still parked above the print head, the Pro Bundle will now correctly resume counting down the timer to retract it to the preloaded state.
• Improved rewinder procedure. Improvement in the rewinding procedure to reduce occurrences of material falling off the spool.
• Improved procedure for triggering break fail wizard. The break-fail wizard should only occur during end-of-filament when the material did not correctly break from the print head. Improvements in the procedure should reduce false-positive occurrences.
• Improved filament signal detection. In some cases, the filament directional signal would wrongfully signal end-of-filament.

Firmware 6.1.0

Release date: January 25, 2021

This firmware is the first public release of firmware version 6, running the Debian Buster operating system. This firmware focuses on networking and security. There is now the possibility to enable or disable a firewall on the printer, which will limit local network traffic. The material selection menu has been improved which replaces the older generic material workflow. Furthermore, the printer security is improved, and the foundations are set for establishing a Latest and Stable firmware release channel.

Note: A hotfix release, version 6.1.1, was released on January 27. A small number of users who had custom profiles synced to the materials were unable to upgrade properly. This is now fixed.

Features

• Implemented network firewall feature. A firewall feature is implemented which can be used to ensure only authorized use of the printer. When using the firewall, the printer will only be available to print via the Ultimaker Digital Factory. The firewall will block local network traffic accessing the printer, blocking users from finding the printer on the network from within Ultimaker Cura. Learn more about using the firewall here.
• Set up network connection via USB. The network connection settings can now be updated using a .config file that can be updated from a USB. This will allow for the provisioning of Static IP on a printer. Read more about this feature on this page: ultimaker.com/usbnetworksetup.
• New workflow for selecting non-NFC materials. The Choose material type menus have been redesigned and simplified. It will now be easier to find synchronized materials in the printer. Users will be able to filter by brand, type, and color. This redesign affects both the Ultimaker S5 standalone and the Pro Bundle.
• Preparation for use of latest and stable release channel. We want to continuously release features as they are developed, and so new firmware releases can be expected monthly. We understand that some users of our products may wish to update on a less regular basis. Firmware 6.1 sets the groundwork to provide users with the option to either follow the latest release cycle, or the stable release cycle on their printers. In upcoming firmware, you will be able to choose whether to follow the latest or the stable firmware release channel. We anticipate the latest firmware releases to follow a monthly schedule, whereas the stable release will follow a quarterly release cycle.

Bug fixes

• Third-party Material needs to have completely matching metadata to upgrade instead of just a unique GUID. The material synchronization will update when all info is matching. Materials can now be updated individually as long as GUID is in order.
• ER52 / ER54 / ER56 loading error wizard correctly tracks the 3 different errors. The loading error wizard will correctly track where it occurred.
• Reduce pickup timeout. The timeout needed to trigger an ER56 has been reduced. The error will now trigger if the feeder has not detected material pickup after 35 seconds. This will reduce filament grind.
• ER70. A new error code was introduced to warn of a never-ending cooldown after a print job.

Firmware 6.0.0

Limited release

Release date: November 26, 2020

Firmware 6.0 is an upgrade to the Ultimaker S-line printers. It is released in a limited form. In this firmware, the operating system of the printer is upgraded to Debian Buster. This in itself brings security improvements to the printer. In addition to the security upgrade, network firewall functionality has been added.

As this is the first firmware upgrade to make use of the new Operating System, it is not released in the usual way. Users will have to manually download the firmware from the online download page and install it via USB. It will not be possible to directly update from the printer menu, and there will be no active notification prompt to do so. Firmware 6.0, or a hotfix version will be released through the regular channels at a further date.

• Upgraded to Debian Buster. Firmware 6.0 introduces an update to the operating system of the printers. This upgrade brings security improvements to the printer and patches some known vulnerabilities.
• Important: With the firewall enabled, material synchronization will not be possible. For now, please synchronize the materials with the firewall turned off, and enable it only after the synchronization is done. A fully integrated solution is being worked on.
• Note on the Wi-Fi setup: The Wi-Fi setup captive portal, used to connect a printer to Wi-Fi, has on occasions not worked as intended. Rebooting the printer, or using an alternative device to connect to the captive portal has usually resolved this case.

This section lists the release notes for all older firmware versions (5.x). These are the pre-Buster upgrade versions.

Firmware 5.8.2

Release date: October 20, 2020

Firmware 5.8.2 is a patch upgrade to 5.8.1. In this release, we have introduced a loading error wizard for the Pro Bundle which catches errors whereby loading would have failed. The wizard provides the user with a chance to recover from this error. Furthermore, improvements to the NFC reading mean that the Pro Bundle should more often correctly read the filament type and material left.

Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle

• Introduced loading error wizard for end of filament. When a critical error occurs during loading at an end of filament (ER52, ER54, and ER56), users will now be shown an error recovery wizard. By following the steps and correcting the fault, users can prevent the critical errors from showing up and ensure their print resumes correctly.
• NFC improvements. Improvements have been made to NFC spool detection. The Pro Bundle can now more reliably read the NFC tag of the loaded Ultimaker material. The chance of an unknown material detection is significantly decreased, which means less chance of seeing the orange exclamation mark. For best results, always load the material by placing it on the left-hand side of the loading bay.

Bug fixes

• Translation improvements. Improved language translations and fixed some typos in certain languages.
• Pro Bundle stuck on boot up. Firmware 5.8.1 saw a slight increase in Pro Bundles that would not successfully boot, getting stuck on startup. This has now been largely improved.

Firmware 5.8.1

Release date: September 29, 2020

Firmware 5.8.1 is a patch upgrade to 5.8.0 which improves the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle. It includes bug fixes, improvements for Ultimaker TPU printing, and enables the unload material functionality in the Pro Bundle when the material is parked.

Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle

• Unload button on screen. With firmware 5.8.0, a new feature was introduced whereby after a print filament was parked above the print head, before subsequently retracting to the Material Station. This occurred on a timer. We have now added an unload material functionality on the display of the Pro Bundle, so that users can manually trigger this action when the material is parked above the print head and after clicking on the Confirm Removal button on the screen. Please note that there can be a delay when clicking on the Unload button, before the material starts to unload.
• Ultimaker TPU parameters updated. Processing parameters of Ultimaker TPU have been improved to ensure that TPU correctly rewinds after a print in the Pro Bundle.

Bug fixes

• Fix for encountering line errors when using one-at-a-time print mode. Users who printed using one at a time mode had reported that the Pro Bundle often threw line errors. Printing with one at a time mode should now properly work, without throwing an error.
• Fix for parked material retracting upon print abort. When two materials were parked above the print head, aborting consecutive single material print jobs could lead to both materials consistently retracting. This is now fixed.
• Fix for low humming noise from motors when aborting prints. When aborting some prints, a low humming noise could be heard from the feeder printers. This is now fixed.

Firmware 5.8.0

Release date: September 1, 2020

Firmware 5.8.0 refines many of the features of the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle. It optimizes processes – notably, it introduces background cooldown, and delayed material parking within the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle. It also contains bug fixes and usability improvements.

Ultimaker S3, S5, and Pro Bundle

• Error codes and warnings in Digital Factory. Printers running this firmware will be able to communicate error states and warnings via the cloud to the Ultimaker Digital Factory.

Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle

• New post-print behavior – background cooldown and delayed material unloading. The S5 Pro Bundle will no longer immediately retract filament all the way back to the Material Station after a print job. When a print job is finished, there will be a delayed unloading of filament from the print head. The user will regain control over the S5 Pro Bundle after both print cores have sufficiently cooled down.
• Material specific delayed unloading. The delay for unloading will be material-specific, with most materials remaining parked above the print head for 2 hours. Ultimaker PVA will remain above the print head for 60 hours.
• Quick start of print jobs with same materials. Materials that are parked above the print head can be used for quicker loading of consecutive print jobs. Subsequent print jobs with the same materials start significantly faster.

Bug fixes

• Dehumidifier ER67. The dehumidifier self-test error was not triggering properly. This is now fixed.
• Dehumidifier ER68. ER68 means that the humidity in the Material Station is not below its threshold of 40%. This error will now only trigger 12 hours after powerup, to give the dehumidifier time to restore the internal humidity.
• Fixed guest printer to Digital Factory connection workflow. Adding a printer that was a guest within a group did not actually connect the printer to your Digital Factory. Now, establishing a Digital Factory connection will remove the printer from the group and allow it to be immediately used.

Firmware 5.7.3

Release date: July 20, 2020

Ultimaker S3 and S5

• Camera stream in Digital Factory. Printers will now be able to stream pictures from the printer's camera onto the Digital Factory. Pictures will be refreshed every 10 seconds.

Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle

• Material Station lights. The Material Station frame lights are dependent on the Ultimaker S5 frame lights and will adjust along with the Ultimaker S5 frame light brightness. The Material Station LED lights above the eject button are not adjustable and will remain on.

Bug fixes

• Abort causes error. Fixed some cases where aborting a print at the wrong moment would result in a blocking ER56 / ER61 error.
• Fixed an end of filament bug. Fixed a case whereby the printer did not continue printing at an end of filament, while there was available material.
• Revised board power down routine. Improved voltage control due to an improved power down routine.

Firmware 5.7.2

Release date: June 16, 2020

• Connect to Ultimaker Digital Factory. Adding printers to the cloud is now adding printers to Digital Factory. You can now find your online dashboard at digitalfactory.ultimaker.com.
• Advanced cloud features. Printers running this firmware will be able to make use of advanced cloud features, such as print queue management and reprint form history as well as features such as renaming and identifying printers from the Digital Factory printer management console.
• Simplified cloud connectivity. The cloud connectivity workflow has been simplified. When connecting to Digital Factory a pin code will be displayed. This pin code will be enough to connect your printer. A connection can be established from outside of your local network.
• Update printer via cloud. Users will be able to initiate a firmware update from their printer management console on digitalfactory.ultimaker.com.

Firmware 5.6.8

Ultimaker S5

• QR codes displayed with error messages. Troubleshoot your issues faster by scanning the QR code that displays on-screen when an error message appears.
• Introduced data sharing for Error codes. We have introduced a data-sharing feature for network-connected printers. This data sharing will facilitate our product improvement by helping us track what sort of errors our users are encountering. You can opt-out of this in the settings menu.

Ultimaker Pro Bundle

• Faster prime and deprime. Purge priming and depriming for the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle has been made faster. When a print job is started that uses the same material as the previous print job, the purge process will use less material leading to a quicker start of the print. The purge process at the end of a print will also consume much less material.
• Wizard for ER61 / failure to break from print head. To reduce incidences of ER61s, a wizard has been introduced to prevent the error from occurring. Follow the wizard to fix the blockage when the filament is unloading.
• Purge speed depends on nozzle size. The purge procedure will now adjust the volume purged according to the print core used.
• Air Manager filter tasks. Users will now get a task informing them when it is time to replace the Air Manager filter.

Bug fixes

• Fixed camera dropping out. Fixed an issue that caused the camera feed to stop working during operation.
• Fixed bug that could corrupt NFC tags. If a material NFC tag information gets corrupted during the writing of information to the NFC tag, this is repaired afterward.
• Bug fix for printing via USB. When printing via USB the Pro Bundle will no longer ask for a configuration change if the correct material is loaded.
• Fixed translation typo in print time left. Several languages had a typo displayed during the print time remaining screen, showcasing the wrong units. This has been corrected.
• Filament handling improved during loading of filament. Filament handling has been improved, and the Pro Bundle will now correctly handle the end-of-filament if the filament is in the load-to-print-head state. Aborting during the load to print head state also works correctly.

Firmware 5.5.12

Air Manager

• Air Manager steps included in welcome setup. The Air Manager steps are now included in the printer welcome setup.
• Guided Air Manager filter replacement. Users are now guided through the process of changing or installing a filter for the Air Manager.
• Air Manager communication error. Fixed printer behavior when encountering a communication error, such as cable disconnect during printing.

Bug fixes

• Air Manager fan speed re-calculated when transitioning in different states. The Air Manager fan will now correctly re-calculate its speed when switching from a maintenance action to a print job.
• Improved material unloading reliability. Improved handling of the filament during end-of-filament should reduce the prevalence of ER61s.

Firmware 5.4.27

Features

• Quieter Air Manager fan. Material-specific lookup tables control the Air Manager fan speed. New, improved lookup tables result in a quieter Air Manager fan for most materials when printing at ambient temperatures (22 °C / 72 °F).
• Cloud printer removal. Disconnecting a printer from the cloud in Ultimaker Connect now also removes the printer from your associated online cloud account.
• Print job previews in cloud. Print jobs sent via cloud now show print job preview images in the cloud as well.

Bug fixes

• About Air Manager screen. Removed a touch interface screen that looped onto itself.
• Error message print core numbering. Standardized all error messages to refer to print cores 1 and 2.
• Reduced prevalence of ER998. Firmware 5.4.24 introduced two new error codes, ER999 and ER998. A bug has been fixed that frequently triggered ER998.

Firmware 5.4.24

Release date: December 4, 2019

• Memory improvements. Enhanced memory management for the Ultimaker S5 enables additional functionality with Ultimaker peripherals.
• Support for the Material Station. Enables the Ultimaker S5 to be used with the Ultimaker S5 Material Station peripheral.
• Support for the Air Manager. Enables the Ultimaker S5 to be used with the Ultimaker S5 Air Manager peripheral. (Further optimizations to material-specific configurations coming soon.)

Firmware 5.2.11

Release date: May 13, 2019

Firmware 5.2.11 is a hotfix release to correct issues reported in firmware 5.2.8. This hotfix will address the issues discussed below:

• Update via USB. Fixed an issue where printers without a network connection could not update to the .swu file system. Users who tried to upgrade to firmware 5.2.8 via USB would get stuck on the stepping stone version due to a mismatch between the onboard timestamp of the printer, which would default to standard Linux (UNIX) time, and the timestamp of the downloaded file.
• XY calibration. Fixed an issue that prevented the XY calibration procedure from extruding properly. All printers running firmware 5.2.8 would initiate the XY calibration procedure with filament in a retracted state. This meant that the procedure would finish its sequence without extruding correctly. Firmware 5.2.11 ensures that filament is fully primed before initiating XY calibration.
• Screen issues. Fixed an issue where the screen on the Ultimaker 3 shifted or rotated. Firmware 5.2.11 included a redundant feature that was interacting with the Linux kernel in an unexpected way, leading to shifted or rotating screens. This feature has been completely removed in firmware 5.2.11.
• Third-party materials. Abrasive materials have been removed from the Ultimaker 3 material selection menu, as printing abrasive materials will damage the Ultimaker 3 feeder wheel.

Known issues

• Wi-Fi on the Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker S5. We received some reports on unstable Wi-Fi functionality on the Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker S5, and we are currently researching a solution. If the Wi-Fi setup does not connect to your network, we recommend performing a factory reset and trying again. This will allow you to repeat the Wi-Fi setup so you can connect your printer to your network.

Firmware 5.2.8

Features

• Remote printing. In combination with Ultimaker Cura 4.0 and an Ultimaker account, the new remote printing feature is enabled. Send print jobs to your Ultimaker 3 or Ultimaker S5 from anywhere in the world and stay informed of the print process no matter where you are.
• Model-based active leveling. We revisited the active leveling process for the Ultimaker S5 to make it more efficient. Instead of probing the entire build plate, the footprint of the model is probed before a print begins, and any disabled nozzles are skipped from the process, so that printing can begin much faster. Model-based active leveling works on the Ultimaker S5 only when sliced with the latest version of Ultimaker Cura, with 'print all at once' enabled.
• Filament runout detection. We have optimized filament runout detection for better accuracy. Filament flow settings are now embedded in the UFP file so that it is material-specific.
• Leveling sensor test. We added a new item to the maintenance menu of the Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker S5. The leveling sensor test checks if the capacitive sensor in the print head is working properly, to keep it in top condition and to let you know if maintenance is needed. The leveling sensor test reports if (a) the sensor is working correctly, (b) signal interference is detected, or (c) the sensor needs maintenance.

Bug fixes

• Build plate noise reduction. For a better user experience, we have reduced the noise when lowering the build plate when prints are finished.
• Frame lights. The internal lights of the Ultimaker S5 can now be completely turned off.
• TPU build plate temperature. The bed temperature for TPU materials is optimized during XY calibration for better reliability.

Firmware 5.1.8

Firmware 5.1.0

Release date: October 31, 2018

Printer features

• Faster active leveling. Active leveling is now approximately two minutes faster on the Ultimaker S5. This is achieved by reducing the time probing the Z-height at each point of the grid. Some improvements have been ported to the Ultimaker 3, while still maintaining a 3-probe sequence. More speed improvements are due in the next release.
• Accuracy and reliability improvements. Small blobs under the nozzle or build plate caused inaccuracies during active leveling and print core heating. To minimize the chances of this, each sequence has been improved for better accuracy.
• Flow sensor accuracy. Material run-out detection for the Ultimaker S5 is now more efficient, with reduced latency between run-out detection and pausing. This means less missed extrusion and a reduced chance of artifacts showing on a finished part where material has run out and been replaced mid-print.
• On-screen release notes. Release notes with descriptions of new features are now visible on the Ultimaker S5 touchscreen when a firmware update is available.
• Print end bed temperature. The build plate temperature now remains visible on the Ultimaker 3 screen, even after it has cooled below 60 °C, making object removal easier and more informed for users.

Ultimaker Connect

This release includes significant improvements for power users of Ultimaker Connect. A lot of these features are also reflected in the new Ultimaker app.

• Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker S5 grouping. Use Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker S5 printers together in the same group.
• Maintenance notifications. When a maintenance task is due, an icon is displayed on the specific printer in the Cura Connect interface.
• Rendered preview. The Ultimaker Connect interface now shows a rendered preview of GCODE data for Ultimaker 3 print jobs for visual reference.
• Firmware update notifications. The Ultimaker Connect interface highlights printers that can be updated with new firmware. This saves having to check and update each printer manually using the built-in display. Updates can be deployed to connected printers via the Ultimaker Connect interface.
• Rename printer. Previously printer names had to be changed by running the Wi-Fi setup on each printer. They can now be updated remotely via the group host.
• Printer identification. Find your printer in a crowd by triggering an identification sequence from the Cura Connect interface, making the selected printer's frame lights flash.
• Filter printers by type. If using Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker S5 printers together in a group, they can be filtered by printer type.
• Better queue management. Managing the queue is a lot more user-friendly due to the following features:
  • Duplicate job. After a job is added to the print queue, it can be duplicated up to 9 times at once.
  • Select/deselect multiple items. Multiple items can now be selected in the queue. Items can also be deleted in bulk, previously this had to be performed individually per item.
  • Reprint from recent history. Recently completed jobs are stored in the Cura Connect interface in chronological order. This includes an option to ‘reprint’ completed items, which places a job back in the queue to be printed again. Doing this side-steps having to send a job from Ultimaker Cura more than once.
• New analytics page. The interface includes a new analytics tab that shows group performance, with dynamic charts that visually represent the data. Depending on the amount of data available, users can select the time period that all charts represent: ‘24 hours’, ‘1 week’, ‘1 month’, ‘3 months’, ‘6 months’, ‘1 year’, or ‘all time’. There are 4 charts in total:
  • Print job completion rate. This shows the all-time average and running average of finished vs. aborted print jobs within the chosen time period.
  • Print job configuration. Shows different print job configurations (materials, print cores, build plates) that have been started by the group within the chosen time period.
  • Material usage. Materials used for all print jobs, including jobs that have been aborted within the chosen time period.
  • Time in queue. Represents the average time that print jobs have spent in the queue before starting.
• Print job history. Shows last 10 jobs added to the queue, including jobs that have finished printing, been aborted, or been deleted.
• Data set export. A complete data set can be exported in CSV format for reporting, material stock forecasting, customer billing, etc.
