Print cores are used in several UltiMaker 3D printers: Factor 4, S series, and UltiMaker 3. They contain the complete hot end and are easy to change without any tools.
The print cores come into contact with the material and are subjected to frequent temperature changes. Therefore, the print cores are classified as consumables. But how long can a print core last?
There is no specific answer, as there are different types of print cores and they can be used for a wide variety of materials and applications. The lifespan depends on a lot of factors, including:
- The type(s) of materials used. Low-temperature, simple materials such as PLA have less impact on the print core than materials that are prone to degrade, such as PVA, or are abrasive, such as PET CF. Additionally, switching between many different types of materials can lead to blockages without proper maintenance.
- The print duration. If the printer runs many short prints in succession, the print cores are subjected to more heating cycles.
- Print core maintenance. Preventively cleaning the print cores can help prevent problems. If blockages do occur, using the hot and cold pull method can almost always resolve the issues. Learn more about the maintenance schedule and the print core cleaning process.
- Printer maintenance. Correct maintenance of the rest of the printer has a positive effect on the print core lifespan, as it prevents problems with, for example, adhesion and grinding. Taking the above into account, we can state the following:
The AA, AA+, and BB print cores can have long lifespans and are known to function well for over 2000 printing hours when proper and timely maintenance has been performed.
The CC, CC+, DD, and HT print cores are intended for abrasive composite materials. Despite their durability, they have a limited lifespan, which strongly depends on the materials used.

The AA, AA+, and BB print cores should never be used with abrasive materials. The brass nozzles will quickly wear when used in combination with composite or otherwise abrasive filaments. This will widen the nozzle hole and flatten the tip of the nozzle, leading to extrusion problems and issues during active leveling.
Never attempt to disassemble, modify, or repair a print core. Disassembling the print core has a high risk of damaging the heat break. This part is thin and fragile. A fractured heat break or leaking nozzle could cause extensive damage to your print head and printer. Learn more here.
The print cores keep track of the number of printing hours, the maximum temperature used, and the amount of material printed. Regularly check these statistics in the menu of the printer. This helps to keep track of your print cores' maintenance schedules and also helps you detect misuse.
Keep your print cores in a safe storage place when not in use. This prevents handling issues such as touching the contact points at the back of the print core. There are several designs for print core boxes and holders on Thingiverse.
