The UltiMaker 3 uses two print cores in the print head, which are interchangeable. There are several types of print cores, two of which are compatible with the UltiMaker 3 and UltiMaker 3 Extended:
- Type AA: For printing (non-abrasive) build materials and Breakaway support material.
- Type BB: For printing water-soluble support material
The other print core types cannot be used on the UltiMaker 3 series. The CC, CC+, DD, and HT print cores are intended for abrasive materials. The UltiMaker 3 feeder is not abrasion-resistant and will be damaged if used with composite materials. The AA+ is optimized for high-speed printing, and this print core is not compatible with the UltiMaker 3.

Each UltiMaker 3 comes with two AA 0.4 print cores - of which one is already installed in print head slot 1 - and one BB 0.4 print core. This means that it is possible to print either with two build materials or with a build and support material.
The print cores contain information so that the printer always knows which print cores are installed and which materials can be used with this print core.
Installing the second print core
During the welcome setup, the second print core must be installed. To do this, follow the steps on the display of the UltiMaker 3.
Note: For the first use, it is recommended to start with Ultimaker PLA and PVA that came with the printer. Therefore, the welcome setup will ask to install the BB print core. If you want to print with two build materials instead, you can install the AA print core.
- Open the print head fan bracket and press Continue.
- The Ultimaker 3 will now automatically detect the print core (AA) that is placed in print head slot 1. Confirm to continue.
- Install the BB print core in print head slot 2 by squeezing the black lever upward and sliding it into the print head.
Note: Never touch the contact points at the back of the print core with your bare hands, as oils and grease can affect the connection.
Tip: Make sure you keep the print core completely vertical while installing it so it will smoothly slide into the print head. If the core does not fully click into place, give it a gentle push.
- The UltiMaker 3 should now automatically detect the print core that is placed in print head slot 2. Confirm to continue.
- Close the print head fan bracket and confirm to complete this part of the welcome setup.
You can now proceed with the welcome setup and load materials into the printer.
Tip: After completing the welcome setup, you can always load, unload, and change print cores via the Material/PrintCore menu on the printer. For more information on how to change print cores, visit this page.
