Before starting a new print, always make sure that the surface of the build plate is prepared. The UltiMaker Factor 4 and several S series printers have a flexible build plate. For most materials, no additional adhesive is required, and the build plate must simply be properly cleaned for optimal adhesion of the printed model. Both sides of the flexible build plate can be used; always ensure that both sides are cleaned.

Oils, greases, and certain cleaning agents could negatively affect the adhesive properties of the surface of the flexible build plate.

Caution: Before you start cleaning the plate, make sure it has completely cooled down. Never remove, touch, or handle the build plate while it is still hot.

Start by making sure the print and all helper parts (such as brims, skirts, or support structures) are removed from the plate. Bend the plate to release the parts, or use a scraper if some parts are difficult to remove. Only use plastic tools with rounded edges to prevent damage to the plate and personal injury. Clean the surface of the flexible build plate using a (microfiber) cloth and >95% isopropyl alcohol (also known as isopropanol or IPA). Using paper towels may leave fibers on the surface. Wipe the flexible build plate with long strokes in one direction.

Caution: Isopropyl alcohol (CAS nr. 67-63-0) is a hazardous, highly flammable substance. Keep away from heat, sparks, static discharge, and other potential ignition sources. Ensure good ventilation and avoid inhaling the vapor. Read the SDS from your IPA supplier to learn more about the risks and safety precautions, or find more information here.

Note: Do not use other cleaning agents, such as acetone, petrol, or thinner, to clean the flexible build plate. This will permanently damage the surface of the flexible build plate. The use of alcohol gels is not recommended as these may contain additives that negatively affect the adhesive properties of the flexible build plate. The use of water is also not generally recommended.

Removing adhesives

Most materials can be printed directly on the flexible build plate without an additional adhesive, such as glue. However, some (third-party) materials may need a specialized glue such as Magigoo for optimal adhesion. For more information about using adhesives on the flexible build plate, please visit this page.

Note: Do not use glue on the flexible build plate unless this is specifically recommended by the material manufacturer.

After printing, remove any glue residue with >95% isopropyl alcohol and a (microfiber) cloth or a non-abrasive sponge.

Note: Do not use scouring pads, as these can leave scratches on the surface of the flexible build plate.

If adhesives cannot be removed with IPA, you can use water and, if necessary, some detergent to clean the flexible build plate. Always thoroughly rinse the plate to remove all the detergent. Leftover detergent can negatively impact the adhesive properties of the flexible build plate. After cleaning with water, immediately and thoroughly dry the plate with a clean (microfiber) cloth.

Note: Do not leave the plate to air dry, as this can cause deterioration of the surface. Do not use the printer's heated base plate to dry the flexible build plate.

Next, wipe the flexible build plate with >95% isopropyl alcohol as described above to ensure optimal adhesion of the next print job.

Reinstalling the flexible build plate

After cleaning, reinstall the flexible build plate to start the next print job. Before placing the flexible build plate, also ensure that the top of the magnetic base plate is clean and dry. Any filament leftovers or residue of adhesives between the magnetic base plate and flexible build plate can cause an uneven print surface. This may lead to errors during the active leveling process.

If necessary, wipe the surface of the magnetic base plate with a clean (microfiber) cloth. If a moist towel is used, ensure the surface is dried thoroughly before reinstalling the flexible build plate.

To reinstall the flexible build plate, hold it at the tabs at the front and align the back of the flexible build plate with the pins at the back of the base plate. Lower the flexible build plate so it snaps into place. Ensure that the plate aligns well with the pins at the back and front of the base plate. Learn more here:
