Article Details

This article describes the calibration procedure for setting the location of the purge positions on the Factor 4 and Factor 4 Plus.

Before and after each print, the print cores are primed above the purge buckets. The position of the nozzle should be accurately aligned with the rubber above the purge buckets. This can be calibrated when necessary.

It is recommended to calibrate the purge position in the following situations:

  • After replacing the purge rubbers
  • After replacing the gantry or belts
  • When the nozzle misses the purge rubber during the prime/deprime procedure

Requirements

To perform this calibration, both print cores must be installed, and you need a small mirror. A mirror is included in the Factor Series Maintenance Kit, but any small mirror will do.

This calibration works best when the tips of the nozzles are clean. If there is too much material on the tip(s) of the nozzle(s), first manually increase the print core temperature and clean the outside of the nozzle(s) with a brush or tweezers.

Note: Before you run the purge location calibration procedure, ensure you have done the lift switch calibration first. The purge calibration will fail if the print cores do not switch correctly.

Instructions

In the Options menu (gear icon), navigate to Maintenance → Frame & motion → Calibrate purge location. Follow the instructions on the display.

Note: During this calibration, you will set the location for both the left and right purge rubbers. It is not possible to calibrate only one side.

  1. Open the glass door of the build chamber.
  2. Remove both of the purge buckets and place them aside. Select Confirm when complete.

Caution: Keep hands out of the build chamber before selecting Confirm to prevent pinching hazards. The print head will start moving.

  1. The print head will move to the left side of the gantry, above the purge rubber. Hold the mirror below the purge rubber so you can see up through the hole. Select Start calibrating to proceed.

  1. Use the controls on the display to accurately position the print head until the tip of the nozzle is exactly in the center of the hole in the purge rubber.

Tip: The single arrows move the print head with small steps (0.1 mm) or press the double arrows for larger steps (0.5 mm).

  1. Use the mirror to check if the nozzle is positioned correctly and select Confirm position to proceed.

Caution: Keep hands out of the build chamber before selecting Confirm to prevent pinching hazards. The print head will start moving.

  1. Repeat the steps above for the purge rubber on the right side of the gantry.
  2. When the calibration is complete for both the left and right sides, install the purge buckets in the gantry again. Ensure that the clear side is facing inwards.
  3. Close the glass door of the build chamber.
  4. Select Finish on the display to close the purge calibration wizard and store the values.

Calibration complete

The calibration process is now finished. Continue with other calibration processes, if needed, or start your next print.

Note: If you are still having problems with the purging location, there may be XY motion issues in your gantry system. Check for skew, or contact support for further assistance.
