The UltiMaker Factor 4 contains moving components. To ensure optimal performance of the printer and accuracy of the printed parts, ensure that the Z shafts, lead screw, and linear guide rails remain well lubricated.
This is part of the recommended preventive maintenance schedule for the UltiMaker Factor 4. Always keep the printer well lubricated for optimal performance.
Lubricate the lead screw
The lead screw is connected to the Z motor and controls the movements of the Z stage. To ensure smooth movement of the Z stage, it is recommended to periodically clean and reapply grease to the lead screw. This should be done approximately once every three months, every 750 printing hours, or when the Z stage feels stuck.
For the lead screw, you need the grease (Eurol) included in the Factor 4 Maintenance Kit. Take the following steps:
- Make sure that the build plate is positioned at the bottom of the build chamber.
- Wipe off as much of the old grease as possible. Dust and other particles may have accumulated in the grease. Use a clean cloth or a paper towel.
- Apply a small amount of grease to the lead screw of the Z motor, just above the Z stage cover.
- Open the Settings menu (gear icon) on the display and go to Maintenance → Build plate → Move build plate.
- Select Raise and then Lower to move the build plate up and down to evenly distribute the oil.
Tip: You can lubricate the lead screw at the same time as the Z shafts. Most of the steps are the same, but the shafts require less frequent relubrication.
Note: Only use the grease on the lead screw, and only use oil on the Z shafts. If you have done so accidentally, make sure to thoroughly clean the shafts before applying the oil for relubrication.
Lubricate the Z shafts
The Z linear shafts are the two 12 mm axles at the back of the printer on which the build plate (Z stage) moves up and down. To make sure that the Z stage can move smoothly at all times, it is advised to regularly clean and lubricate the Z shafts. This should be done approximately once every six months, every 1500 printing hours, or when the Z shafts feel dry.
For the Z shafts, you need a (sewing) machine oil. Take the following steps:
- Make sure that the build plate is positioned at the bottom of the build chamber.
- Wipe off the old lubrication and any dirt on the shafts. Use a clean cloth or a paper towel.
- Apply a small drop of oil to each of the Z axles, just above the Z stage cover.
- Open the Settings menu (gear icon) on the display and go to Maintenance → Build plate → Move build plate.
- Select Raise and then Lower to move the build plate up and down to evenly distribute the oil.
Tip: You can lubricate the Z shafts at the same time as the lead screw. Most of the steps are the same, but the lead screw requires more frequent relubrication.
Note: Only use oil on the Z axles, never use grease. If you have done so accidentally, make sure to thoroughly clean the shafts before applying the oil for relubrication.
Lubricate the linear guide rails
The linear guide rails are part of the gantry system. The X beam and print head glide over the guide rails during printing in the X and Y directions. To ensure that the print head can move smoothly and consistently, regular lubrication is recommended. This should be done approximately once every six months, every 1500 printing hours, or when the rails feel dry.
For the guide rails, use the grease supplied in the syringe, included in the Factor 4 Maintenance Kit. Take the following steps:
- Wipe the three guide rails with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove any of the old lubrication or parts that may have accumulated on them. Manually move the print head as required to reach all parts of the rails.
- Place the print head in the back left corner of the gantry.
- Apply a small amount of lubricant to the linear guide rail on the X beam, just beside the print head.
- Apply a small amount of lubricant to the linear guide rails on either side of the gantry, just in front of the X beam carriages.
- Manually move the print head to the front right corner of the gantry and back again to equally distribute the grease.
