Main components of the Ultimaker 2+

Get to know the main components of your Ultimaker 2+ or Ultimaker 2 Extended+. Knowing what's what will help you understand your printer and facilitate your onboarding process.

Tip: The main components of the Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ are the same. The only difference between the two models is 10 cm (4 in) in height.

1. Build plate The Ultimaker 2+ has a heated build platform with a glass build plate. The build plate (or 'Z-stage') moves down layer by layer during printing.
2. Print head The print head moves in the X and Y directions during printing and extrudes filament from the nozzle. The nozzle can be easily exchanged for a different size.
3. Print head cable The print head cable contains the wires for the print head fans, the heater, and the temperature sensor.
4. Bowden tube The Bowden tube guides the filament from the feeder to the print head.
5. Glass build plate The glass build plate is the print surface. It is recommended to apply a thin layer of glue for optimal adhesion.
6. Button Use the rotate-and-click button to navigate through the menu and select actions.
7. Display The small but efficient display shows several menu options and provides information about your print.
8. SD card slot Insert an SD card to start a print.
9. Spool holder Place a spool of material on the spool holder before loading it into the feeder. The spool can turn on the holder during printing.
10. Feeder The geared feeder reliably feeds material to the print head.
11. Power switch Use the switch to power the printer on or off.
12. USB port Insert the USB cable to update the firmware via Ultimaker Cura.
13. Power cable The cable of the power adapter is connected to the back of the printer. Ensure that the flat side of the power cable is facing up.
