Ultimaker S5 mainboards

If you are experiencing issues with your Ultimaker S5 that requires replacing the mainboard, it is important to note which version of the Ultimaker S5 you have.

In 2020, Ultimaker released an updated version of the Ultimaker S5. The machines are functionally the same, but there are some different parts that are not interchangeable. One of these parts is the main electronics assembly at the bottom of the printer. More information about identifying the Ultimaker S5 version can be found on this page.

Note: This page is informative only. We always recommend that you first consult with your local reseller or Ultimaker's Customer Service team before accessing the electronics, so you can be made aware of important safety notifications regarding the power supply and working ESD safe.

Caution: Local laws and regulations could impose restrictions on accessing the bottom of the Ultimaker S5 (both versions) because these devices have a built-in power supply. Always check with your local reseller or contact support before removing the bottom cover.

Mainboard types

The two main electronics assemblies look quite different and are easy to identify:

This printer type has a mainboard assembly with an Olimex, this is the red-colored board. It also has a red Wi-Fi board on the opposite end. This printer type has a mainboard assembly with a SOM, this is the green-colored board. The Wi-Fi module (also green) is located next to the SOM.

Note: These parts are not interchangeable between the two printers.

Firmware provisioning

After replacing the mainboard assembly of an Ultimaker S5R2 (with the green SOM board), you must also perform the provisioning procedure. The same electronics are used on the Ultimaker S3 and Ultimaker S5R2, so the correct machine type must be installed. Instructions are found on this page.

Tip: This is not required for the Ultimaker S5R1.

Connection guides

A quick overview of which cable is connected where can be downloaded below for your Ultimaker S5 version. Again, we recommend always first contacting your local reseller or Ultimaker support before starting a mainboard repair, reconnection, or replacement.
